Humans spread out of Africa and then around the world a hundred thousand years ago. How far did we make it? Dr. Brian Buma will share the findings from two expeditions that found the southernmost, and then the northernmost, evidence of pre-Industrial human presence.

The southernmost site hangs on the southernmost valley on Isla Hornos, the famous Cape Horn, under the imposing peak that caps the southern cliff. It was discovered in 2019 when Buma led an expedition to explore the region’s ecology.

The northernmost site was discovered in 2023, on Buma’s expedition to map the ecology of the northernmost terrestrial land on the planet, Inuit Qeqertaat (Kaffeklubben Island).

These sites are the north and south geographic extremes of the human species discovered to date. Buma will outline the story of the expeditions and discuss opportunities for more exploration in the future. (http://www.brianbuma.com)
